No dice for 333 suspects caught in a week

Among the arrests were two dozen who were apprehended during an illegal street racing operation, and at least seven others were caught in possession of firearms and ammunition.
In the past week, the City's enforcement services arrested 333 suspects and recorded 57 485 traffic and by-law offences.
'It's been another busy week for our enforcement services, with some good successes, in spite of the many challenges and demands. Not only did we see drunk driving arrests more than double, but our Law Enforcement and Metro Police officers recovered numerous firearms in some of our most gang ravaged areas, where the City is deploying as many resources as we have at our disposal. This week brings new challenges, as both our emergency and enforcement services will be tested in dealing with the expected weather-related impacts. The public can help by being alert to their personal safety, on the road, and in their communities, but also by reporting any potential risks as soon as possible so that they can be attended to,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
On Saturday evening, 6 July 2024, the Traffic Service led an integrated operation in Mitchells Plain amid complaints about illegal street racing. Officers made 21 arrests for drunk driving, arrested two motorists for outstanding warrants, and another was apprehended for possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
In general enforcement efforts over the past week, Traffic Officers recorded 51 855 offences, and more than doubled their weekly arrest tally from 32 to 67.
Among those arrested were 57 on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, three arrests for reckless and negligent driving, and seven for various other transgressions, including possession of stolen vehicles, presenting false documentation or assault on an officer.
In addition, officers impounded 183 public transport vehicles and executed 1 815 warrants of arrest.
Law Enforcement officers made 191 arrests during the past week and issued 3 184 notices for various transgressions.
LEAP officers recovered four firearms and two zip guns in Tafelsig, Manenberg and Hanover Park, while Metro Police officers recovered a firearm in Hanover Park – seven suspects were arrested.
Metro Police officers arrested 75 suspects and issued 2 446 traffic and by-law notices.
PUBLIC EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION CENTRE
The PECC recorded 1 443 incidents this weekend, including 85 assault cases and 40 domestic violence cases.
Call takers also logged 63 motor vehicle accidents, 26 broken down vehicles and 11 incidents of trees obstructing roadways.
